Why English matters more in Iraq than you think

It is not just one subject on the report card. In Iraq, it quietly decides three big things in your child’s life.

Day one

lectures, books and references in medicine and engineering are in English

University science is taught in English

In Iraqi colleges of medicine, engineering, science and agriculture, the medium of instruction is English and almost all books and references are written in English. The student who arrives comfortable in English spends first year learning medicine. The one who does not spends it translating.

Scholarships and the best jobs ask for English

Study abroad, international companies, organisations and most well-paid technical work ask for English, often proven with a test like IELTS. All of it is built on the English your child learns at school now.

Admission is decided by fractions, and English is a seventh of it

The ministerial average for the scientific branch is the total of seven subjects divided by seven. English is one of them, so every 7 marks your child gains or loses in English moves their average by a full 1%. At the top, that is the whole difference: the University of Baghdad’s College of Medicine needed 100.89% (706.24 marks) and its College of Dentistry 99.07% (693.52). Under 13 marks apart.
